Does betting DraftKings when it disagrees with Pinnacle work?
Short answer: On NBA player prop Unders, so far yes, modestly; on NFL props, no. On 1,393 NBA lines from January to March 2026 where Pinnacle rated the Under at least 2 points likelier than DraftKings, the DraftKings Under returned +6.1%; on 868 such lines since the 2026-27 season began it has returned +3.6%, not yet clear of noise. On 3,494 NFL pairs the same comparison lost money, and swapping Pinnacle for other offshore books removed the NBA result entirely.
The idea being tested
Pinnacle is treated as the sharpest book; DraftKings prices for a recreational audience. If DraftKings is sometimes slow to follow Pinnacle, then on lines where the two books post the same number but Pinnacle's no-vig probability for a side is clearly higher than DraftKings', DraftKings' price on that side should be too generous. OpenSlate wrote that rule down before testing it (Under only, gap of at least 2 percentage points, identical line) and measured it at DraftKings' actual price.
NBA: positive, modest, still being proven
| Sample | Lines | Under won | Return at DK price | 95% range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan–Mar 2026, 46 game dates (where the rule was built) | 1,393 | 56.1% | +6.1% | +1.7% to +10.8% |
| Same period, the mirror image (Overs DK prices too generously) | 1,028 | — | −6.3% | −11.6% to −1.4% |
| 2026-27 season so far (games played after the rule was frozen) | 868 | 56.1% | +3.6% | −2.8% to +6.9% |
The mirror result matters: if the gap were noise, Overs on the other side of the same comparison would not lose consistently. The new-season figure is positive but its range still includes zero, so it is not yet proven; the rule stays frozen until 300+ and then 600+ new-season lines decide it.
NFL: it doesn't carry over
On 2026 NFL weeks 1–8, across six markets Pinnacle posts (receptions, receiving yards, rush attempts, passing yards, passing touchdowns, rushing yards), 3,494 DraftKings–Pinnacle pairs were compared, including lines at different numbers mapped with a statistical model. Unders the rule picked returned −4.3% (95% range −16% to +5%), and Pinnacle's prices were no better calibrated than DraftKings' (+0.7 points, against +2 to +3 in NBA). The mechanism behind the NBA result simply isn't visible in NFL props.
It has to be Pinnacle
Re-running the NBA rule with BetOnline or Bovada as the reference instead of Pinnacle, on the same dates, turned +6.1% into −1.9% and −1.4%. Being an offshore or "sharp-ish" book is not enough; the result depends on Pinnacle specifically.
What this means if you compare prices yourself
- A gap between two books is a starting point, not a bet. Which book, which sport and which side all changed the answer here.
- Overs that look cheap next to Pinnacle lost money in every sample (Trap Overs).
- Check the price you can actually get: DraftKings usually moves toward Pinnacle within hours, and a pick is only as good as the price you take (EV calculator).
OpenSlate publishes the picks this rule produces and grades every one of them in public, losses included, on the record page.
