Is DraftKings or Pinnacle sharper on NBA player props?

Short answer: Pinnacle is generally treated as the sharper book: it accepts large bets from professional bettors and moves its prices on that money, so its lines are the market's reference. DraftKings limits sharp accounts and prices for a recreational audience. Sharper does not mean always right, and in OpenSlate's own NFL research Pinnacle's receptions and rushing prices were not more accurate than DraftKings'.

What "sharper" means

A sharp price is one that is hard to beat. A book gets sharp prices by letting informed bettors bet into it and moving the line when they do: every big bet from someone good is information. Pinnacle is built that way. It keeps limits high, welcomes winning bettors, and moves fast. DraftKings is built the other way: it limits or closes accounts that win consistently and prices for a recreational audience, so its lines carry less of that information.

So does Pinnacle always have the right price?

No. Sharper is about the average, not every line. Pinnacle can be slow on a late injury, thin on a minor market, or simply wrong. And it is not equally sharp everywhere: in OpenSlate's own NFL research, Pinnacle's prices on receptions, receiving yards and rushing attempts were not more accurate than DraftKings', so a gap between the two books on those markets was not a signal.

How the books compare today

Live figures appear here while today's lines are posted.

A small gap is normal: two books rarely land on exactly the same probability. A large gap is usually news (see how injury reports move lines), and the price behind it can move within minutes.

How you can test "sharper" yourself

The practical test is the closing line. Record each book's price for a line in the morning and again just before tip-off. The book whose morning price lands closer to the final, most-informed price was the better early estimate. Over many lines, Pinnacle's early prices tend to sit closer to where the market settles, which is what people mean by sharper. On any single line, the result tells you very little.

One more caution: sharper on average is not the same as sharper on a given night. Thin markets, late scratches and unusual matchups are where even the best book's estimate is weakest, and where the two books disagree most often.
